Itchy Vulva (Pruritus Vulvae)

 Human Vulva

An itchy vulva (pruritus vulvae) is common. It can be upsetting and troublesome. There are many causes.

Treatment varies, depending on the cause. However, many of the general measures listed below can help to ease the itch, whatever the cause.

What is an itchy vulva (pruritus vulvae)?

Pruritus vulvae means itching of the vulva. The vulva is the area of skin just outside the vagina. Most women experience a slight vulval itch now and again. However, pruritus vulvae means the itch is persistent, and causes distress. The itch may be particularly bad at night and may disturb your sleep. About 1 woman in 10 sees a doctor about a persistent itchy vulva at some stage in her life. Vulval itching can affect any woman, at any age. It can lead to scratching and rubbing which can break the skin and can lead to soreness, bleeding and skin infections.

What causes an itchy vulva (pruritus vulvae)?

An itchy vulva is a symptom, not a condition in itself. It can be caused by many different conditions. Therefore, if you have a persistent itchy vulva, you should see your doctor to find out the cause.

Causes of an itchy vulva tend to differ slightly between adults and children. However, they can include the following.

Infections. For example: thrush, threadworms, scabies, and some sexually transmitted infections.
Skin conditions may affect vulval skin. For example: eczema, psoriasis, lichen simplex, lichen planus and lichen sclerosus.

Sensitisation of the vulval skin to soaps, perfumes, deodorants, excessive sweat, condoms, wet wipes, textile dyes, detergents, fabric conditioners, sanitary wear, etc.

Urinary or faecal incontinence. This can make the skin of the vulva moist and irritated. In little girls a particularly common cause is careless or inadequate washing or drying of the area, and wiping the bottom in the 'wrong' direction (towards the front). Scrubbing too vigorously with toilet tissue can also contribute.

Menopause. Because of lower oestrogen levels, the vulval skin tends to become thinner and drier after the menopause, and this can make it prone to itch.

Pregnancy can cause itch due to vulval engorgement. There is also an increased risk of vaginal discharge and thrush during pregnancy, which may also cause itch.

Breast-feeding can cause itch due to low oestrogen levels.
Any cause of a generalised body itch may also cause itching of the vulva. For example, a generalised body itch may be a side-effect of some medicines or due to some blood disorders, thyroid problems or kidney or liver disease.

Diabetes can cause itch in the vulval area, particularly if the diabetes is not well controlled and sugar levels are tending to run high.

Lichen sclerosus is a condition of the vulva which causes itching and soreness and is more often seen in women with immune conditions such as thyroid disorders or diabetes.

A cancer of the vulval skin is an uncommon cause. Usually in these cases a small lump or nodule is present.

Unknown causes. In some cases, including some severe cases, no cause can be found.

Do I need any investigations?

Often, your doctor will be able to find the cause of the itchy vulva after talking to you and examining you. Examination may involve your doctor looking at the skin of your vulva and may also involve an internal (vaginal) examination. They may suggest that swabs should be taken from your vulva and/or vagina to look for causes of infection..

Sometimes, other tests may be suggested, including blood tests - for example, to look for diabetes, thyroid, kidney or liver problems, etc. Skin patch testing may be suggested in some cases to determine if there is something that may be sensitising and causing irritation of the vulval skin. A separate leaflet called Patch Testing for Contact Dermatitis gives further details. Rarely, a biopsy of the vulval skin may be suggested. A small sample of the skin is taken and examined underneath a microscope.

What are the treatments for an itchy vulva (pruritus vulvae)?

Treating the cause

Most of the time, when a cause can be found, the cause can be treated and the itch improves. However, depending on the underlying cause, sometimes prolonged or repeated treatment may be needed. Your doctor will advise on the best approach depending on the particular cause.

The treatment varies, depending on the cause. For example, identifying and stopping the use of anything that may be sensitising the vulval skin, using antifungal cream for thrush, using antibiotic medicines for certain infections, using steroid cream for various skin conditions, using hormone cream or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if the itch is related to the menopause.

In young girls, learning to wipe gently from front to back, and to wash and rinse well and dry even when showering (when the vulva can be missed or left soapy) will help.

General treatments

These are treatments which are likely to help with vulval itch whatever the cause:

Moisturisers

Bland moisturisers (emollients) such as aqueous cream or emulsifying ointment can help to ease the itch, whatever the cause. You can use these in addition to most other treatments. Use them liberally. They can also be used as a soap substitute. Emollients such as aqueous cream can be stored in the refrigerator to keep them cool. If you are feeling particular irritation, using some cool emollient from the refrigerator on the skin may be soothing.

You can buy moisturisers at pharmacies, or obtain them on prescription. However, there is a slight word of caution. Occasionally, some people become sensitised to various ingredients that are in some moisturisers. This can make itch worse. This is unusual, however, and bland moisturisers without added perfumes do help symptoms in most cases.

Try to avoid the itch-scratch cycle

The itch-scratch cycle occurs when scratching causes more itching - which causes more scratching - which causes more itching - etc. So, if you scratch, it may make the itch worse. Excessive scratching can also cause thickening of the skin - which then becomes even itchier. Therefore, apart from any other treatment, try not to scratch if at all possible. Keep your nails cut short and don't wear nail varnish. Consider wearing cotton gloves at night to stop scratching in your sleep. Scratching may also damage the vulval skin and increase the risk of the skin becoming infected with germs (bacteria).

General vulval skin care and other advice

The following may also help ease vulval itching, whatever the cause.

Clothes

Wear loose 100% cotton underwear. Avoid nylon or synthetic underwear material which tends to block fresh air, and causes you to sweat more.

    Change your underwear daily.
Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes such as cycling shorts or leggings. Skirts and dresses are probably better than trousers. Stockings are probably better than tights. The aim is to allow some air to get to the vulva, and not to allow it to become too sweaty.
Consider wearing no underwear - for example, when you are at home, or at night.

Washing

Wash your vulva gently, once a day. Do not scrub or wash vigorously and avoid using a sponge or flannel to wash with. Over-cleaning may make symptoms worse. Use a bland, unscented moisturiser as a soap substitute. (Using water alone may dry out the skin and make symptoms worse.)
Taking a shower is generally better than having a bath, as it is easier to wash the vulva - but take care to wash off any soap..
Do not put on your underwear until your vulva is fully dry. Dry the skin gently with a soft towel. A hairdryer may be useful to dry properly. Make sure it is on cool and held well away from the skin.
Try to avoid getting shampoo (which runs down your body in a shower) on to the vulva, where it may irritate.

Other general advice

Sometimes soaps, perfumes, bubble baths, deodorants, scented creams, the dye in toilet tissue, etc, can irritate (sensitise) the delicate vulval skin. Don't use any of these on your vulva or in your bath water or shower. Use plain, non-coloured toilet tissue. Use non-perfumed sanitary towels and panty liners and try to avoid using them on a regular basis. Consider avoiding plasticised 'one-way' top sheets which can cause sweating and reduce air circulation. Avoid antiseptics or special vaginal washes.
Some people develop a skin sensitivity to a washing powder or fabric conditioner. This is uncommon, but it may be worth considering changing to a different brand of washing powder, and not using any fabric conditioner or biological washing powder for underwear.
Avoid condoms that are lubricated with spermicide, as they can be sensitising. Similarly, avoid perfumed lubricants.
    Do not shave pubic hair.

Help with sleep

An antihistamine medicine at bedtime may help if sleep is affected. Antihistamines do not have a great effect on the itch, but some cause drowsiness (for example, hydroxyzine). This may help you to sleep. A doctor or pharmacist can advise on which antihistamines are sedating.

What if no cause is found?

In most cases, a cause can be found for an itchy vulva. Treatment is then aimed at the underlying cause. However, in some cases no cause can be found. The general advice given above on clothes, washing, etc, will usually help. In addition, your doctor may advise that you use a mild steroid ointment such as hydrocortisone for a week or so. This often settles the itch within a few days. It may also help to break any itch-scratch cycle that has developed. However, you should not use steroid ointment regularly on the vulva, as it can have a thinning effect on the skin with long-term use.

Note: steroid ointments can make some conditions of the vulva worse. Some steroid creams are available 'over the counter', but you should see a doctor about a persistent itchy vulva before using any treatment, particularly steroid treatments.

Some women find an itchy vulva embarrassing, particularly if it becomes a persistent (chronic) problem. It can make them feel distressed and depressed and may interfere with their sex life. If you feel like this, go to see your doctor. They may be able to help, and it is more likely than not that a simple treatment will solve the problem.

Gender Selection

Is Gender selection a good strategy for having the right baby?

Gender selection

If you are trying to become pregnant, you may be considering using certain techniques to determine the gender of your child. Many couples would love to have a little girl, while others dream of having a little boy. As a result, some of these couples try to increase their odds of having a child of the desired gender. In the past, the only methods available to enhance your chances of having a child of a certain sex were based on old wives tales and produced varying results. Now, however, couples may be able to choose the sex of their child with startling accuracy. Called gender selection, these techniques are receiving much attention and are hotly debated for their moral and ethical implications.

What is Gender Selection?
Gender selection is the term given to any procedure used to increase your chances of having a child of a specific sex. Also known as sex selection, many couples are now considering using fertility treatment methods to increase their chances of conceiving either a boy or a girl.
In addition,American  Center for human reproduction defined Gender selection, or sex selection, as a fertility procedure used to choose the gender of a baby prior to conception.

In order to create a baby, a woman’s egg must be fertilized by a man’s sperm. All eggs carry X-chromosomes, while sperm can carry either an X-chromosome or a Y-chromosome. If an X-bearing sperm fertilizes the egg, your child will be a girl; if a Y-bearing chromosome fertilizes the egg, your child will be a boy. You typically have a 50% chance of conceiving a girl and a 50% chance of conceiving a boy. Sex selection techniques work to increase your chances of having a child of one sex or the other.

The Background of Gender Selection
Gender selection is not a product of recent times. It has actually been around for many centuries, and can be dated back to Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. In the past, gender selection was based on unscientific practices, like sexual positions, intercourse timing, and the preparation of specific foods. In recent years though, new technologies have been developed to make the process of gender selection much more effective. Now couples can really increase their chances of having a child of a certain gender through various fertility procedures.

Is Gender selection a good strategy for having the right baby?

Reasons for Gender Selection
You may be wondering why a couple would be interested in choosing the gender of their child. Well, there are actually a number of common reasons for trying to increase your chances of having either a boy or a girl. Some reasons focus on the economic, social, or cultural benefits of having a child of a certain gender. Other common reasons include:

Preventing Genetic Disease: Some couples decide to choose the sex of their child in order to prevent passing along certain genetic disorders. Some genetic diseases, like hemophilia and muscular dystrophy, occur only in boys, so some couples decide to have a girl in order to prevent passing along these illnesses.

Family Rebuilding: Parents who have lost a child may decide to rebuild their family by having a child of the same gender. These couples often seek out sex selection procedures.

Family Balancing: Couples sometimes choose sex selection in order to balance their families. This means that couples who already have a child choose to have a child of the opposite sex.

Gender Selection Procedures
Three types of treatments are available to help couples choose the sex of their child.

The Gradient Method
The gradient method is a sperm sorting procedure performed at many fertility clinics. Sperm is placed in a centrifuge and spun at high speeds. This process helps to separate the X-bearing sperm from the Y-bearing sperm. Because X-bearing sperm contains more genetic material, it weighs more, and thus falls to the bottom of the test tube during the spinning process. This allows sperm of a specific gender to be selected for use during IUI treatments. The gradient method has been criticized for providing less than desirable results. However, it’s price and simplicity attracts many couples.

Flow Cytometry (MicroSort)
Flow cytometry is also a sperm sorting procedure, and is performed under the brand name MicroSort. Flow cytometry uses a special fluorescent dye to identify X-bearing sperm. This dye binds to DNA material contained with sperm cells. Because X-bearing sperm contains more DNA than its Y-bearing counterparts, these sperm absorb more dye. This allows your reproductive endocrinologist to sort out the female sperm from the male sperm. Once the sperm has been sorted, it can be used in IUI or IVF procedures. Flow cytometry has a very high success rate, giving you a 60% to 70% of conceiving a child of your desired gender.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)
PGD is the most effective method to use when it comes to gender selection. PGD is a highly complex procedure in which DNA from your embryos are analyzed in order to determine their sex. Embryos are created in a laboratory using sperm samples from the father and eggs retrieved from the mother. These embryos are allowed to divide for three days, after which one cell from each embryo is removed. These cells are then analyzed for DNA and genetic material in order to determine the sex of your embryos. Embryos of the desired sex are then implanted into your uterus. PGD is the most effective sex selection method, giving you a 99% chance of conceiving a child of the desired sex.

Herbal Gender Selection
This product is blended in different packages taking into consideration the difference in individual metabolic flows and hormonal regulation . Lessons from Human Anatomy teaches the unavoidable depreciation of strength in women as a result of hormone and age. Hence herbal sex Selection Kit is made to care for all that (inbox us for details).

Ethical and Legal Concerns

Choosing gender selection is by no means an easy decision. There are many ethical and legal concerns surrounding the treatments, which can make it very difficult to decide on sex selection or to find clinics that provide these services. Many opponents of gender selection argue that the procedures are morally and ethically wrong. Some see gender selection as promoting sexual stereotypes and sexual discrimination. Others see it as the beginning of a slippery slope, possibly leading to procedures which could allow parents to choose the physical and psychological characteristics of their children.

If you are interested in sex selection, it is important that you first investigate the laws in your area. Sex selection is illegal in some countries, and in others it is only allowed for medical reasons. In the United States, there is no governing body that has ruled on sex selection procedures. Instead, it is up to fertility clinics to offer the procedures at their own discretion. However, these techniques are typically only performed to prevent genetic diseases or defects. Gender selection based on non-medical reasons is also illegal in Canada and Great Britain, however it is available in some countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Armpit Boils

Causes and Remedies for Armpit Boils

Armpit Boils

What Are the Causes of Armpit Boils?

Armpit boils arise from an infection of the hair follicle under the arm. The infection creates large lesions that form under the armpit and are usually filled with a clear fluid called pus. The infected area may become red and inflamed; it may also easily become irritated when clothes rub across the surface. Individuals experiencing armpit boils may feel pain and discomfort under the arms. The infection at the source of armpit boils may arise from multiple causes.

Poor Hygiene

Poor hygiene can cause armpit boils because of the dirt that is trapped within the hair follicle. Failure to bathe regularly can cause excess dirt, sweat and bacteria to collect under the armpit, causing a painful boil to appear. The boil may be either red or dark in color and is usually sensitive to the touch. According to the Better Health Channel, armpit boils may occur due to buildup of dead skin cells and bacteria on the skin under the arm. If an opening such as a cut is present on the surface of the skin, bacteria may enter and form boils.

Ingrown Hairs

Armpit boils in women may occur as a result of excessive underarm shaving, which can lead to an ingrown hair under the arm. The hair will grow under the surface of the skin and form a large boil as a result. According to New York University Langone Medical Center, the boil will soften with time, which can cause a large pus-filled head to form at the top of the boil. A doctor should be notified of the condition if it is accompanied by a fever. Boils can also be contagious if popped or allowed to drain.

Staph Infection

Staph bacteria are present on the skin's surface and can be found in the nose, armpits or other warm creases of the skin. If a Staph bacterium enters an open sore, it can cause a boil. According to Hope College Health Center, boils may occur as a result of a Staph infection developing around the armpit and usually heal on their own. Staph infections are most common in areas that are covered with body hair, which makes the armpit an ideal place for the bacteria to dwell.

Moreover, alcoholism is the physical and mental addiction to alcohol. Prolonged use of alcohol will affect both physical and mental conditions, and there are also various social implications from associated behaviors. Physically it affects the digestive system, pancreas, nerves, and heart.

Some Common Causes of Alcoholism

• Depression
• Schizophrenia
• Genetics
• Inheritance
• Established behavior patterns
• Environment
• Damaged relationships

Home Remedies for Alcoholism

Tip 1:

First and foremost the person should be willing to give up alcohol. Sadly, but very true that the only way to do it is, to make a clean break.

Tip 2:

Apples- eating as many Apples as possible at regular intervals, reduces the craving for alcohol. They also help to clear the toxins from the system.

Tip 3:

Grapes-This fruit contains a pure form of alcohol. A person wanting to give up this habit should have a meal of grapes every 4-5 hours, for a month at least.

Tip 4:

The juice of Bitter gourd leaves is very good for clearing intoxication. 3 tee spoons of juice mixed in a glass of buttermilk is very good as it helps to heal the damaged liver also.

POT BELLY IS NOT A SIGN OF AFFLUENCE!

 Obesity

Pot belly is a term commonly used to refer to abdominal or central obesity, a condition in which there is an outward protrusion of the belly; or an increased diameter of the lower abdomen, resulting from excessive accumulation of fat in the mid-section and a ballooning out of the intestines.

It is a health hazard that is viewed in our environment as evidence of arrival of wealth or good living.
Obesity, as a broad term, refers to a Body Mass Index above 30 and is fast becoming an epidemic in the modern world. It is one of the leading direct and indirect causes of ill health and death among the general population all over the world.

A pot belly results from continuous deposit and accumulation of fat tissue in the inner organs and the intestines, to such a degree as to have negative impact on the general health of the individual concerned.
Often, a build-up of toxic fecal matter in the colon over time also contributes to ever-widening abdominal girth, which is labelled ‘pot belly.’ The Austrian scientist and holistic physician, Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, describes the resulting abnormal posture of such individual as “the big bass drum player” posture.
It is worthy of note that abdominal obesity is not necessarily peculiar to overweight or obese individuals, as people with apparent normal weight may have unhealthy abdominal girth/ waistline and would therefore be regarded as having a pot belly.

It is equally worthy of note that abdominal fat in obesity is far more dangerous to general health than fat found under the skin and fat found in skeletal muscles.

Health hazards of pot belly
Abdominal obesity has been linked to several health conditions, including hypertension, Metabolic Syndrome X (Reaven’s disease), Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, erectile dysfunction, certain cancers, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Generally, the causes of obesity also factor in as causes of pot belly/abdominal obesity, and they include:
Diet: The way most people eat is at odds with the needs of the body. Obesity often results from net energy imbalance, in which the individual eats and stores more fat than s/he expends in energy on normal daily activities. Improper dietary habit as regards regimen (time of day when meals are ingested), content (quality of ingested food) and technique (poor chewing habits, especially the so called ‘swallow’) result in fermentation and decay of undigested food, steady deposit of abdominal fat and slackening of the intestines which, over time, results in a pot belly.

Genetic predisposition: Some individuals are said to be deficient in leptin – a hormone produced by fat cells which tells a person when he or she is full and should top eating. When you are deficient in leptin, you are more likely to overeat and become obese.

Cushing’s syndrome: This is a hormonal disorder caused by high levels of cortisol, with symptoms such as upper body obesity, rounded face, increased fat around the neck, thinning arms and legs, fatigue, weakness, high blood pressure, and mood disorders.

Medications: Steroids, such as dexamethasone.
Chronic constipation/irregular bowel movement: This leads to build-up of toxic fecal matter in the colon, the decomposition of which leads to release of such toxins as putrescine, neurine and cadaverine. These are re-absorbed into the blood stream in a process referred to as intestinal auto-intoxification in Mayr medicine.

Detoxification helps
Detoxification is the physiologic or medicinal removal of toxic substances from the body of a living organism. In humans, detoxification is chiefly carried out by the liver and to a lesser degree, the skin, kidneys and lungs. However, in people with abdominal obesity, the liver is often overworked and over-loaded, hence the need for detoxification.

Such individuals usually require an overhauling of their dietary habit, thorough cleansing of the intestines using medical solutions and herbal teas, the colon through colon hydrotherapy and irrigation; as well as toning up of the inevitably slack guts which put pressure on the pelvic organs and the spine, using the technique of Mayr abdominal therapy. These can be achieved via supervised detoxification.

Detoxification also rids the intestines of parasites and worms which contribute to ill health and death. Combined with relaxation and regimented physical exercise, detoxification helps to:
Lose excess weight/fat. The individual undergoing detoxification soon observes a steady weight loss, which is most noticeable around the mid-section. This is because fat in the internal organs is more metabolically active and gets broken down faster than fat in the tissues.
Instill a healthy eating habit which arms the individual with lifelong knowledge of correct diet, proper chewing techniques and regular exercise/relaxation methods.

Greatly reduce a person’s risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, infertility and other conditions that have been linked with pot belly.

Improve physical appearance and skin tone. A person’s physical appearance is often a good indicator of their state of health. Detoxification helps improve skin tone and generally beautify physical appearance.
Engender personal confidence, inner peace and feeling of well-being. It is recommended that people should annually rid the body of toxins in a health therapy protocol.

What is Measles?

Measles and its remedy

Measles and its remedy

What is Measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease and is sometimes also referred to as Rubeola. Symptoms and signs of measles include a hacking cough, fever, watery eyes and runny nose, as well as a rash. A characteristic feature of measles is the development of Koplik’s spots – small red spots with blue-white centers that appear inside the mouth. Sensitivity to bright lights is another common feature in children who have measles.

Measles is best known for the full-body rash it causes. This rash usually has a reddish-brown blotchy appearance and initially surfaces on the face, around the ears, and on the neck. Within three days, it then spreads to the rest of the face, neck, body and then on to the feet. The rash lasts for about a week.

Diagnosing Measles

The diagnosis of measles is based on the physical symptoms presented, especially the characteristic rash. In some cases, measles may lead to other health complications such as croup, bronchitis, pneumonia, pink eye, myocarditis, and encephalitis. Secondary ear and bacterial infections may also occur.

The measles vaccine, together with the mumps and rubella (German measles) vaccines (MMR), should be administered to prevent and protect against the disease. A booster dose is generally administered around the age of 4 or 5 years old.

Infants who have not been immunized may receive the measles vaccine within 72 hours of exposure to the virus. However, there has been controversy surrounding the MMR immunization— it has been linked to autism– most likely related to the inactive ingredients originally found in the vaccine.
What Causes Measles?

It is a very common but dangerous childhood disease caused by the paramyxo virus. Because of widespread immunization, the number of children who contract measles has declined dramatically. When cases of measles do occur, it is generally because children have not been vaccinated, their immunity has diminished since they received the vaccine, or they have weakened immune systems.

The measles virus is spread by the transfer of droplets from the nose, throat and mouth of someone who is in the early stages of the disease. The droplets are sprayed into the air during sneezing and coughing. Measles can also be transmitted through direct contact with the nasal and throat secretions of an infected person. Objects or personal items used by the infected person will also be contaminated with the measles virus.

Help for Measles

Pregnant women, infants younger than one year old, as well as those with a weakened immune system who contract the measles virus may be given a protein (antibody) injection called hyper-immune gamma globulin within 5 days of exposure to the virus to combat infection. This injection can prevent measles from developing or lessen the symptoms. Children with measles should be kept in bed at home until they recover fully.

Home treatment is usually the only treatment needed for measles. In short, you have to let the virus run its course. Measles is highly contagious, and it is crucial that the person infected be kept isolated until fully recovered. The period of isolation is normally from about four days before the rash breaks out, until four days after. Generally, children may resume their normal activities after 7 to 10 days once the rash and fever have disappeared.

Measles and its remedy

Conventional Medicines

Medications that may be taken to relieve symptoms such as a fever include acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is also important to remember that children should not be given aspirin for fear that they may develop a potentially fatal disease known as Reye’s Syndrome. Antibiotics may be prescribed by your doctor if you develop a secondary bacterial infection such as an ear infection or pneumonia.

Helpful Tips for Children with Measles

Make sure children with measles drink plenty of fluids like water, juice, tea or lemonade during this period, as children in particular become dehydrated very quickly.

Use a humidifier to relieve the symptoms of a cough and sore throat.
It is quite likely that bright lights may bother children – so dim the lights, close the curtains, and keep them as comfortable as possible.
Children should also get as much as rest as possible.
Children should not scratch the rash, however hard this may be!
Vitamin A has been linked to reducing the severity of measles – ensure your child eats plenty of food rich in Vitamin A such as fish, liver, egg yolks, dark green leafy vegetables and yellow fruits.

Natural remedies for measles

The following are effective natural cure for measles:

Liquorice: Liquorice is a very effective natural cure for measles. Powder liquorice root and add honey to this powder, take half a teaspoon of each daily for better results

Precautions in handling a measles patient

Measles patient must be kept in isolation, for the disease is infectious and should be given complete rest, which will facilitate speedy recovery.
The patient can be given lots of warm water to drink, as this flushes the toxins out of the system. For better results, drink them in the mornings on empty stomach and in the evenings.
Initially, the patient should be given juices of fruits like orange and lemon, as the person experiences loss of appetite, this would be sufficient.
Gradually, the patient can start eating fruits and well balanced diet, which includes lots of green vegetables and fruits, to boost the immune system.
Measles patient should be kept in well ventilated room.
Avoid sunlight as measles damages eye tissues which results in water eyes. The room should have subdued light, so as to not further cause damage to the eyes.
Avoid milk, milk products, as they may worsen the condition. If the child is heavily dependent on milk, limit the intake.
Ensure that the room and the surroundings are clean and tidy

Sickle Cell Disease and its treatment options

Sickle Cell Disease and its treatment

sickle cell disease and its treatment

The term sickle cell disease (SCD) describes a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. People with SCD have abnormal hemoglobin, called hemoglobin S or sickle hemoglobin, in their red blood cells.

Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.

“Inherited” means that the disease is passed by genes from parents to their children. SCD is not contagious. A person cannot catch it, like a cold or infection, from someone else.

People who have SCD inherit two abnormal hemoglobin genes, one from each parent. In all forms of SCD, at least one of the two abnormal genes causes a person’s body to make hemoglobin S. When a person has two hemoglobin S genes, Hemoglobin SS, the disease is called sickle cell anemia. This is the most common and often most severe kind of SCD.

Hemoglobin SC disease and hemoglobin Sβ thalassemia (thal-uh-SEE-me-uh) are two other common forms of SCD.

Some Forms of Sickle Cell Disease

    Hemoglobin SS
    Hemoglobin SC
    Hemoglobin Sβ0 thalassemia
    Hemoglobin Sβ+ thalassemia
    Hemoglobin SD
    Hemoglobin SE

Overview

Cells in tissues need a steady supply of oxygen to work well. Normally, hemoglobin in red blood cells takes up oxygen in the lungs and carries it to all the tissues of the body.

Red blood cells that contain normal hemoglobin are disc shaped (like a doughnut without a hole). This shape allows the cells to be flexible so that they can move through large and small blood vessels to deliver oxygen.

Sickle hemoglobin is not like normal hemoglobin. It can form stiff rods within the red cell, changing it into a crescent, or sickle shape.

Sickle-shaped cells are not flexible and can stick to vessel walls, causing a blockage that slows or stops the flow of blood. When this happens, oxygen can’t reach nearby tissues.

The lack of tissue oxygen can cause attacks of sudden, severe pain, called pain crises. These pain attacks can occur without warning, and a person often needs to go to the hospital for effective treatment.

Most children with SCD are pain free between painful crises, but adolescents and adults may also suffer with chronic ongoing pain.

The red cell sickling and poor oxygen delivery can also cause organ damage. Over a lifetime, SCD can harm a person’s spleen, brain, eyes, lungs, liver, heart, kidneys, penis, joints, bones, or skin.

Sickle cells can’t change shape easily, so they tend to burst apart or hemolyze. Normal red blood cells live about 90 to 120 days, but sickle cells last only 10 to 20 days.

The body is always making new red blood cells to replace the old cells; however, in SCD the body may have trouble keeping up with how fast the cells are being destroyed. Because of this, the number of red blood cells is usually lower than normal. This condition, called anemia, can make a person have less energy.

Sickle Cell Disease and its treatment

Home Treatment

Home treatment for sickle cell disease includes steps to control pain and prevent complications of the disease. If you don't already have a home treatment plan, ask your doctor to help you make one. Use this plan whenever symptoms are present. Your plan may include tips for:

    Managing pain.
Home treatment for prolonged erection of the penis (priapism).
    Staying healthy.
    Coping with stress and worry.

Managing a child's special needs

You can help your child cope with special needs in school by:

Making arrangements with teachers or a tutor to help your child keep pace with classmates when illness causes absences from school.
Explaining to teachers that children with sickle cell disease may need to use the bathroom more often than other kids. They also need more water than the other students. Not drinking enough water can raise the chance of a sickle cell crisis.
Educating teachers and other school employees about the signs and symptoms of sickle cell disease that need urgent medical care. Written instructions will help school personnel know what to do and who to call in an emergency.

Children with sickle cell disease can usually exercise and play normally if they:

Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after exercise. Lack of fluids (dehydration) can cause cells to sickle.
Get regular rest breaks during vigorous exercise.
Stay warm. Exposure to cold air, wind, and water can trigger a sickle cell crisis. Dress children in warm layers of clothing for cold-weather activities. Your child should avoid swimming and playing in cold water.

Folic acid supplements are often a necessary part of the diet for people with sickle cell disease, particularly if you aren't eating enough folate-rich leafy vegetables (such as spinach).

Medications

Medicines that treat sickle cell disease include hydroxyurea and various pain medicines. Some of these medicines require a prescription. Others are available over the counter. Pain medicine may work best when combined with pain management skills, such as distraction; guided imagery; deep breathing; relaxation; and positive, encouraging self-talk.

Pain treatment for sickle cell disease pain varies depending on how bad the pain is and how long the pain lasts. Medicines that treat the pain include over-the-counter pain relievers (such as ibuprofen) and prescription opioids (such as codeine). Opiate pain medicines are used under careful medical supervision.

Surgery

Some sickle cell complications are treated with surgery. Surgery options include:

Removal of the spleen (splenectomy), to prevent the trapping of too many red blood cells in the spleen (splenic sequestration).
Removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy), to prevent problems caused by gallstones.
Draining fluid from the penis in cases of severe priapism.
Hip replacement, if the tissue in the hip breaks down and dies because it doesn't get enough blood (osteonecrosis).

Other Treatment

Blood transfusions may be used for sickle cell disease. They are the treatment of choice to prevent strokes and treat other aspects of this disease. They can reduce the risk of some complications and improve symptoms of severe anemia.

Stem cell transplants can cure sickle cell disease. But they are not common.

Natural Remedies For Sickle Cell

Get support for sickle cell anemia by focusing on your unique nutritional needs. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may help you manage this kind of chronic anemia:

What You Need To Know:

• Fight back with fish oil
Reduce the frequency of severe pain episodes by taking a daily fish oil supplement providing 33 mg of EPA and 23 mg of DHA for every 2.2 pounds of body weight

• Think zinc
Under the supervision of a doctor, take a daily supplement of 100 mg of zinc, plus 2 mg of copper, to help prevent cell damage and speed healing of leg ulcers associated with sickle cell anemia.

• Fill up on fluids
Drink plenty of water and other fluids to maintain good circulation

• Take a test
Have your blood homocysteine levels checked to find out if daily folic acid supplements of 1 to 4 mg are right for you, or to discover if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency that requires treatment
